FAQs

General

Our founding crew has been shaping sound since the early 2000s, with over 40 years of combined experience. Jayson, Kaniel, and Randy—our founders and lead engineers—each bring at least 14+ years of producing and engineering expertise to every session.

We’ve crafted platinum records, earned Grammy recognition, and collaborated with industry heavyweights. And we have the credentials to prove it: 7x platinum records and 2x Grammy nominations among us.

We’ve had the privilege of collaborating with some of the biggest names in the game. Our collective credits include work with industry titans like Drake, Chris Brown, Young Thug, and more. We bring that same level of expert attention to every project—whether you’re dropping your first track or your fifteenth album.

Backroom Studios is equipped to handle all genres at a world-class level.

While we built our reputation in hip-hop, R&B, and rap, our new space was designed to cater to everyone from solo artists to full bands. Founder Jayson brings professional training in recording multiple instruments and vocalists, enabling us to serve pop, rock, and indie bands as well as hip-hop, rap, and more.

Our big room, The Platinum Suite, can accommodate up to 20 people, perfect for larger ensembles. And our more intimate spaces suit solo artists and producers. Whether you’re a rapper, a rock band, or anything an artist in virtually any genre, we have the expertise, equipment, and space to elevate your sound to industry standards.

We offer four distinct studio spaces to suit different needs and budgets:

We’re flexible. While we have a team of highly skilled in-house engineers, we understand that some artists prefer to work with their own engineers. You’re welcome to bring your own engineer, or we can pair you with one of ours who best fits your project’s needs.

Our engineering team is as diverse as the Portland music scene itself. Led by our founders—Jayson, Kaniel, and Randy—each with their unique specialties and industry connections, we’ve handpicked a crew that can handle any genre or technical challenge. From hip-hop heavyweights to rock virtuosos, we match you with the engineer best suited to bring your vision to life. Some of our team members are bilingual, ensuring clear communication for our Spanish-speaking clients.

We know inspiration doesn’t clock in 9-to-5, so neither do we. Backroom Studios offers flexible booking options to fit your creative schedule. Whether you need a quick 2-hour session to lay down some vocals or a full day to craft your masterpiece, we’ve got you covered. Check our online booking system for real-time availability, or reach out directly for custom scheduling options.
